Development of the liver

The liver develops from several structures:

The hepatic diverticulum is a ventral outgrowth from the caudal foregut. This expands into the mesodermally-derived septum transversum and ventral mesogastrium. As the developing liver expands it grows into the ventral mesogastrium dividing it into lesser omentum and the falciform ligament.
